Tetris Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

As any major awards ceremony approaches, you'll find an outcry for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator made the case for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • Another creative title missed out during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title got ignored recently
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these are games without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
